The Art of Foreplay

The commonly understood definition of foreplay is “erotic stimulation preceding sexual intercourse”. However, the full definition found in the Merriam-Webster dictionary includes “action or behavior that precedes an event”. For all you married or soon-to-be-married couples, pay close attention to the second definition.

Sexual foreplay is pretty self-explanatory, but what about non-sexual foreplay? Many couples only engage in foreplay behind a closed bedroom door, but if you desire to experience true intimacy in the way the Creator intended, it is imperative to commence love-making long before the act of intercourse.

During the passage of any given day, if we fail to be attentive to our spouse, we fail to engage at a deeper level. If we treat one another harshly, belittle or name-call, or if we are consumed with the distractions of performing daily tasks, we deprive each other of that profound connection God designed to be shared between husband and wife. Simple acts such as helping with the dishes or taking out the trash pave the way for reciprocal responses. A loving glance or wink, a simple caress of the cheek, or a sincere compliment or word of encouragement, is a form of foreplay often neglected between married couples.

If you are expecting fireworks in the bedroom without striking a match in the kitchen, you

will lower your lovemaking experience from spiritual communion to carnal act. Sexual intimacy is designed to conjoin a husband and wife in Divine unity, and set their relationship uniquely apart from all others. God did not plan for the sole purpose of physical intimacy to be procreation. Indeed, there would have been no need to make it pleasurable if He intended it to be strictly utilitarian! The Author of Marriage set apart, from all other types of relationships, the sacred covenant of marriage, replicating this holy union after the intricate and profound bond between Christ and His Church.

Nurturing the marriage relationship is essential to a satisfying sexual connection. Practice a more meaningful form of foreplay by meeting your spouse’s deepest needs and desires outside the bedroom door.
