Love Letters

Small gestures of devotion can speak volumes. There are any number of ways you can express your affection to the one you love! Back in the 1950's when my Dad was courting my Mom, they lived in different towns and therefore frequently corresponded with each other via hand-written letter. Long-distance phone calls could be pricey back then and there was no such thing as eMail at that time. As a young couple in love they were anxious to convey those special feelings to one another in as many ways as possible. One of those unique ways of communicating their devotion was to place a postage stamp upside-down on their letters to each other. In this way, their love was proclaimed before the envelope was opened.

Placing a postage stamp on an envelope upside-down became a popular way to say “I love

you” during war time when correspondence was often censored by government officials. Also, because the cost of postage to an overseas address could be exorbitant, letters were typically kept short.

Mom and Dad adopted this upside-down postage stamp practice during their courtship days and continue it even now when corresponding with their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. We continue this tradition in my extended family when we send written correspondence to one another. That upside-down stamp is most definitely not an error in the placement of postage. It’s a simple practice that very deliberately declares “I love you”!
